Like her openly prostitute character Vanessa Carlyle in the Deadpool movies, who proudly declared, “I’ve played a lot of roles, but damsel in distress is not one of them.” New York-born Brazilian-born actress Morena Baccarin is known for playing strong characters. She commanded as Anna, the leader of the aliens in the 2000 reboot of “V.” She was outstanding as Jessica Brody, the wife of a Marine-turned-terrorist (played by Damian Lewis) in the spy drama Homeland, which earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series . And Comic-Con fans adored her as the scientist, Dr. Leslie Thompkins, in the crime drama Gotham, centered around the Batman universe. (That series is where she fell in love with now-husband Ben McKenzie, who played the lead role of Jim Gordon).
She won’t give away any spoilers for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which hits theaters on July 26, but the mother-of-three laments the time that has passed, but Vanessa has stayed true to the character. “She’s a survivor and someone who doesn’t suffer fools,” Baccarin, 45, tells Alexa. It was fun for the Juilliard graduate to see friends Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in action together on set, as well as “seeing some of the old gang” I won’t say who! You’ll have to see the movie!” she says.
The International Rescue Committee ambassador, who is on the board of the Waterwell, a civic-minded theater in New York City, will be busy this summer doing press for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” as well as shooting in London and Iceland and getting some much needed family time in Colorado. These are all things that the star – who can next be seen in the movie Elevation, as a scientist trying to save the world from giant insects! — takes with her, no matter where she is in the world.
